Anytime I have the chance to do some snorkeling or SCUBA diving, I bring along the OM Systems (previously Olympus) TG-6. Recently I used this camera during a trip to Crystal River Florida to swim with the manatees. The camera itself is waterproof to 50′ but with the underwater housing it is good to 300′. I only went to about 10′ snorkeling on this day but got some good shots even though the visibility was poor.
The OM Systems TG-6 is widely regarded as one of the best compact cameras for underwater and rugged outdoor photography. Here’s a detailed review based on its features, performance, and user feedback.
The TG-6 delivers excellent image quality for a compact camera, particularly in bright conditions. Underwater images are vibrant and sharp, thanks to the specialized underwater modes and white balance settings.
Durability:
- Waterproof: Up to 15 meters (50 feet) without housing.
- Shockproof: Up to 2.1 meters (7 feet).
- Freezeproof: Down to -10°C (14°F).
- Dustproof and Crushproof: Withstands up to 100 kgf (220 lbf) of force.
Camera Specifications:
- Sensor: 12-megapixel BSI CMOS sensor.
- Lens: 25-100mm equivalent f/2.0-4.9 lens.
- Processor: TruePic VIII image processor.
Among many other features, this camera has underwater modes, microscope mode and 4K video recording.
I am quite happy with the TG_6 and I’ll be using in the housing with Backscatter M52 wide angle wet lens in a couple of weeks in the Florida Springs.
UPDATE 7/28/24
